The Zion Preparatory Academy was an adaptive reuse project in Seattle's Rainier Valley. The school houses 500 K-eighth grade students and 255 daycare students. The project consists of a remodel to the former DHSS rehabilitation center, built in 1959, and a new daycare village consisting of nine wood frame buildings. This project required acquiring both Conditional and Master Use permits from the City of Seattle. Extensive upgrading of the existing building was required to meet currents seismic and energy codes. A short schedule and tight budget required thoughtful planning and creative design. The interior color scheme reflects the African-American heritage of the students attending the school. |
