Design Statement:
This waterfront residence is designed to serve a variety of needs. Short term it will function as a guesthouse. Long term it will be a retirement home. The first floor, designed to be fully accessible, accommodates the core house functions. The upper floor is designed to accommodate family guests or a live-in caregiver.
The image of the house is a response to the challenging light of the site. The residence will receive early morning light. A shading devise ensures that the space will not be overwhelmed with bright light. This same shading device reflects light into the space as the sun moves to the west, where tall trees quickly cut off the direct sunlight. The client's goal was to incorporate stone and metal in a form that in distinctive and unique building when viewed from the water. Different forms were used to define the different functions of the home.
